Jill Bell, lettering artist will be treating us to a variation of her presentation Traces of the Brush given at TypoBerlin, Germany this past year about surviving, thriving and staying relevant as a commercial artist rooted in traditional lettering methods.
With a degree in English from UCLA and Advertising/Design from Otis/Parsons, Bell worked as a production artist for Saul Bass, as a sign painter and a calligrapher. She will discuss how and why she guided her career away from traditional hand lettering work into designing and producing digital type, logos and marks and yet retains the spirit and essence of her training.
Join Jill after the lecture for a workshop exploring ways to add panache to your handwriting and in turn enhance your design skills. No previous experience required.

varius markers, preferably black or dark color, including
-one with a brush point (such as TombowABT, MArvy LePlume, Sakura Sumi Brush, Stadler Mars Graphic 3000)
-a flat-edge "calligraphy" marker about 2mm to 3.55mm wide (such as elegant Writer Medium or Board, Y&C Calligraphy Duo)
-pointed markers in two or three sizes (such as Zig Writer, Sharpie, Sakura Micron, any felt tip pens.)
-pencil, eraser, ruler
Optional:
other types of chisel edged pens (Staedtler Lumocolor B, Sharpie Chisel, Prismacolor)
blue line graph paper if you have it and like it
any other writing instruments you may have or want to try out
I found the best marker selection at craft and hobby stores (Micheal's, JoAnn, Hobby Lobby - look in more than one section, ie: scrapbooking as well as art) and art supply stores (Coldsnow, etc). Test them out if possible. Keep it simple.
